To find out who your competitors are is relatively simple. Just Google a bit for your market and topic and you’ll find blogs, forums and other related websites. Also take a look at Google ads & check for advertisers on all related websites.
After you do some research you’ll end up with a nice list of all sorts of competitors.
There’s 2 categories of competition.
Direct & Indirect.
Direct : Selling the same thing to the same market in the same way.
Indirect : Selling something different into the same market.
Indirect competition is not always a bad thing, because you can always use them to your advantage and partner up for advertising opportunities, cross promotions etc.
One thing you should engrave in your brain is:
Don’t Fear Competition
To put it in another perspective : if no one is doing it, you should probably run as far as you can from that market. Competition… [click to continue...]
Another step in the market research process is to create your customers avatar.
During this step, you might come up with 2-3 different avatars, but you will have the one that pops out.
Here’s what you should have for your avatar:
- Name :
- Sex : M/F
- Age :
- Hometown :
- Annual Salary :

After you got your niche market down, you now have to do a little research to make sure there’s enough people that will consume your content.
The number one easiest way to research a market is Google.
Hopefully you know how Google by now. Some other similar resources can be : Yahoo Answers, Wiki Answers, Wikipedia.
Here’s an example of how I do a quick market research.
Search in Google : number of “market”. So for example if your market is Forex traders, just type : number of Forex traders in United States, or any other location you’re planning to target.
That should give you a bunch of useful resources that will show you all the numbers you need.
Next step is to go to Google Keyword Tool.… [click to continue...]
The easiest way to understand what Markets & Topics are is this :
Market = Who
Topic = What
It’s very important to understand the differences between markets and topics, specially if you’re planning on running an authority blog or magazine.
To put in simple words, Market is the audience to who you are delivering your content to and Topic is what kind of content you’re delivering to your market.
For example if you’re planning to write about “Marathon Training ” and you will target “Long-Distance Runners” than your topic is obviously “Marathon Training” and your Market is “Long-Distance Runners”. If you correctly identify your target market than you can deliver lots of awesome content on different subjects. For example, long-distance runners might be also interested in the best running shoes, hydration… [click to continue...]
